Timber origins

Structural timber used by SHAWOOD is sourced from sustainably managed European spruce forests in Northern Europe. These forests are also eco-certified, and deliver select timbers with superior quality, uniformity and load bearing performance.

The care and attention invested in every SHAWOOD home isn’t just about precise construction. It’s also about how the home makes people feel.

SHAWOOD understand the desire for modern simplicity and clean lines, and draw on considered Japanese philosophies, married with a practical understanding of the Australian lifestyle.

Japanese aesthetic

A philosophy that honours nature, quality and longevity is at the core of the Japanese aesthetic. Their focus on precision and craftsmanship leads to beautifully simple structures that function effortlessly. This philosophy also underpins every SHAWOOD designed home.

Underpinning every SHAWOOD home is a durable structural framework. SHAWOOD’s proprietary Post and Beam system incorporates structural timber and specialised metal joints, bolted together for superior strength and unparalleled accuracy.

Milled and glued under pressure, these laminated structural beams and posts are inherently strong and capable of spanning wide spaces to deliver the architectural features unique to SHAWOOD.

MJ System

SHAWOOD's proprietary Metal Joint construction system, with its laminated post and beam components, delivers absolute precision and a substantial improvement in quality and reliability.

Structural components are pre-engineered for millimetre perfect calibration, and are designed to lock together for extreme accuracy, rigidity and strength.

SHAWOOD strives to provide a better future by working at the forefront of new technologies and sustainable construction.

Within each home, a high level of architectural rigour produces natural passive solutions that make living both enjoyable and, importantly, energy efficient.

Careful consideration of operable windows allows every SHAWOOD home to be passively controlled. This also plays a critical role in reducing the reliance on air conditioning. Low-e glass reduces heat gain in summer by more than 35%, and as a by-product, significantly reduces UV radiation.

SHAWOOD’s unique wall cavity ventilation system, located at both the top and the bottom of a SHAWOOD main exterior wall, allows any condensation to escape naturally, reducing the risk of long-term frame damage through trapped moisture.

The Japanese philosophy of ‘Yutaka’ underpins every SHAWOOD home. This term means ‘richness of experience’. Vital to this is the establishment of a greater connection between the built environment and nature, achieved through careful planning of doors and windows, providing greater potential for views onto gardens and courtyards.

Each component of every laminated structural timber post and beam is tested and pre-engineered under strict moisture controlled conditions. This ensures every SHAWOOD frame delivers consistent structural performance, with minimal shrinkage and expansion after installation on site.

Landscaping is considered an integral aspect of the built environment, and is a fundamental element of SHAWOOD’s holistic approach to design.

This considered design approach, facilitates private living spaces, and also enables an appreciation of the natural surrounds.

In a SHAWOOD home, the intelligent framing system enables distinctively wide spans. This allows for a spectacularly open transition between the indoors and outdoors.
